RPM Challenge Days 11 to 14

I got very little done after my mother-in-law left, as we were preparing to head to New York for my birthday. This was planned before I decided to do the RPM Challenge, so I knew I wouldn't have these days to work. More on the trip is forthcoming. After our return, I got back to work.

I concentrated on the three songs with drums. First, I replaced the scratch bass tracks on the first two songs. I added a bass track to the one with only guitar. On night two, I set up the guitar. I spent one night on each song layering guitar tracks. On the last night, I discovered that the key of the lead guitar part on the track I was working on didn't work with the bass and guitars I had put down. It didn't take long for me to alter the key and re-record the part.

At the end of four days, I had three songs largely finished, two more needing lots of work and a weekend to go.

RPM Challenge Days 7 to 10

I was ready to start laying down drum tracks, except for one thing. The kit had four-year-old heads on it and sounded terrible. So, I went in search of the drum shop. I found it on the second try. When I searched on my phone, Google Maps gave me the old location. I remembered it being there, so I went and found nothing. I tried again the next morning and found it easily in its current location, three-quarters of a mile north of the old location on the same street. I bought a full set of heads and went home.

Unfortunately, I had a ton of other stuff to do at home before my wife and mother-in-law arrived, so I only got half of the heads on. I finished the next day and got it all sounding decent, but it was another day before I actually was able to lay any tracks down.

Over the past two nights, I have recorded takes on three of the five songs I have. I will do my best to do the remaining two and maybe one more take of the last one I did tonight. Then, I will edit the tracks and try to finish them. Technically, I'll be pretty close to the 35 minutes because they're all long. So, I'm going to finish the five songs and then see how many days I have left to add one or two more.

After the long day of the third show, we crashed pretty hard and got some real sleep. We still spent New Year's Eve day doing a bunch of stuff around the house, dealing with the robbery, but we actually had time to get dinner before the show. The original plan was to go to the Panthers-Canadiens game and then leave after the second period for the show. We didn't end up having time for that and instead went for a pre-game dinner.

New site, random things

Welcome to the new site. I spent most of Thursday night attempting to import the contents of the old Blogger site, which I finally managed to do successfully after downgrading to the previous version of the Wordpress import module. There is no direct import tool, so I had to export the old posts, convert to a Wordpress file and then import. So, everything that was there is now here.

I have not touched the RPM Challenge project for two days now, owing to work on this and some major housecleaning projects. I also mounted our new television to the fake fireplace that comprises one wall of our living room, so now it will no longer block the fake fireplace opening. It looks pretty sharp and will be even better once I hide the cables.

RPM Challenge Days 5 & 6

Tuesday night I spent some time arranging the scratch tracks I put down on Monday. I cut and pasted the most accurate performances of each part, then looped them and arranged them with the click track. I cut the seven songs I had started down to six when I started recording. I worked on five of the six, as one of them needs more writing. The arrangements are all tentative. I'll keep working them out as I go.

RPM Challenge Day 4: Scratch Tracks

I finally got back to work today. The parts for my guitar showed up in the mail today, so I started off with some bass tracks. I played around and found some tempos, then put the bass parts I have for two songs down with a click. I didn't do the third because I decided I don't like it.

RPM Challenge Day 3: More Songwriting

Thursday night I went back over all the stuff I had done the previous two nights and came up with one more thing. The parts for my guitar shipped so I should have that up and running again soon.

Today I had originally planned to get some demos started. I had a bunch of other stuff to do as well and it all took longer than expected. I did get the computer moved and the mixer wired up and I fetched the mic stands from storage. Tomorrow I have two morning errands to run, a small amount of kitchen cleaning and a Super Bowl party. Around that will be solid work on demos.

RPM Challenge Day 2: Songwriting

Tonight was the Panthers' Season Ticket Holder team signing, so I went to that right after work, followed up by dinner at Stevie B's in Weston. After we got home, I unpacked my new, dirt cheap SX bass, which arrived this afternoon. I sat down with it in the living room and checked it out. It plays reasonably well. There's some buzz, but some of it is probably easily fixable. It's a "vintage" jazz bass, with the old neck style that's really narrow at the nut. It's a little weird as I'm more used to playing metal basses or 90s Jazz basses, but I think it will do the trick.

RPM Challenge Day 1: Songwriting

This year I have entered the RPM Challenge. I have entered under the name "The Irony Set," which Liz doesn't like. No matter. I will make my ambient dub metal album nonetheless. At least that's what I'm anticipating now. No telling how these things turn out, especially if they aren't well-planned, which this one is certainly not.

I missed the first day owing to the very dull Panthers-Ducks game last night. I might as well have stayed home, but I wasn't feeling great and wouldn't have gotten much done anyway.
